Insulated and Thermally Broken Roof Hatches: When You Need One
An insulated roof hatch has an insulated cover and curb, and a thermally broken roof hatch adds a break in the metal frame so heat does not conduct straight through it. Both cut heat loss and the condensation that forms when a cold metal hatch sits over a warm, humid space.
When to specify one
- The hatch is over a conditioned (heated or cooled) space, not an unconditioned attic or shaft.
- The building is in a cold climate, where an uninsulated hatch loses heat and can drip condensation onto the floor or ladder below.
- Energy code or the project thermal envelope calls for a minimum insulation value at every roof penetration.
What R-value and a thermal break mean
R-value measures resistance to heat flow, and a higher number insulates better. A cover and curb built to a higher R-value cut the conductive loss through the hatch. A thermal break addresses the frame, which on a plain hatch is a continuous metal path from outside to inside. Breaking that path slows the cold conducting through and reduces surface condensation.
